Paul Dowell is currently ranked 6th Dan with the HDKI. He started training with the KUGB in 1983 at Sendai Karate Club in Sunderland. At that time the senior instructors at Sendai included Sensei's Jeff Barwick, Owen Murray, Christine Pullan, John Holdsworth and Julie Nicholson. Paul continues to train with Sensei's Holdsworth and Nicholson at their club in Washington. Paul achieved 1st Dan in 1986 under the examination of Sensei Enoeda. Following repeated success in national competitions Paul was selected onto the KUGB England squad and represented England at several European championships winning medals in both Kata and Kumite events. Paul achieved 6th Dan in 2018 under the intense examination of Sensei Andy Sherry, Sensei Bob Poynton and Sensei Frank Brennan.

In 2021 Paul joined the HDKI.


Paul is currently ranked 2nd Dan. He originally started training in the 1990's at Sendai karate club in Sunderland under the tuition of Sensei Jeff Barwick. After a prolonged lay off from karate Paul returned to training along side his daughter Mia who also still trains at the club, and they have been joined by younger daughter Ava. Paul passed his 2nd Dan grading in 2015 under sensei Andy Sherry and Sensei Frank Brennan. Paul is a secondary school teacher and uses these skills to assist during sessions at the Seaham dojo.



Sensei Holdsworth, 6th Dan, is the chief instructor of Ronin karate club. He is a qualified grading examiner and carries out gradings at the Seaham Dojo. A full biography can be found on the Ronin Washington page of this website.


Sensei Nicholson, 6th Dan, is one of the most successful competitors in the UK  winning numerous National, European and World titles. As an instructor she has coached many students to success at both national and international level. A full biography can be found on the Ronin Washington page.
